Description
Matošević 'Grimalda' Red 2018
Matošević Winery, founded in 1996 by Ivica Matošević, is a pioneering family estate in Istria, Croatia. Known for its innovative approach and dedication to quality, the winery cultivates 10 hectares of its own vineyards and manages an additional 15 hectares in cooperation. Ivica Matošević, a self-taught winemaker, has been instrumental in the Istrian wine renaissance, focusing on indigenous varieties and sustainable practices.
The 'Grimalda' Red 2018 is a blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Teran, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Each variety is aged separately for 15 months in oak barrels before blending, resulting in a complex and long-lived wine.
On the nose, it offers aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants, and ripe plums, complemented by notes of chocolate and coffee. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with well-balanced tannins and a long-lasting aftertaste.
The wine's minerality reflects the unique soil of the Grimalda vineyard, situated on steep southern slopes at altitudes of 260-300 meters, benefiting from a Mediterranean climate and proximity to Lake Butoniga.
This Bordeaux-style blend showcases Matošević's commitment to producing high-quality wines that express the distinct terroir of Istria. The 'Grimalda' Red 2018 is suitable for aging, with the potential to develop further complexity over the next 5-10 years.
